AMC’s $31 ‘Beetlejuice 2’ Drink Goes Viral

A blue drink in a generic plastic cup to enjoy at the movies? It will cost you $31!

A Beetlejuice Beetlejuice AMC Theaters’ promotional drink is gaining attention on social media due to its seemingly exorbitant price tag. The drink is the Sandworm Slayer, a special drink topped with gummy worms.

“No, Beetlejuice should have come out and brought me my drink for that price,” one commenter replied, while another quipped, “You could have bought 6 shares of AMC Theatres with that $31, I don’t know which one would have been worth that price.”

There is some context to all this, however, which takes at least some of the fun out of it.

First off, this is a 700ml cocktail made with blue and black raspberry juice and “premium vodka” (we’re skeptical about the “premium” part, but that’s what the press release says). So this isn’t just a blue soda.

Second, the regular price of the Sandworm Slayer is $21, which is steep but more reasonable. According to AMC’s internal research (yes, they did some research on this!), the price at 92% of AMC stores is $21 plus tax. The drink above was apparently purchased in Illinois, which has unique alcohol pricing laws that we won’t bore you with, which brought the price of the drink to $28.25 plus tax.

So if you go to one of the 8% of AMC theaters located in Illinois and opt for the 24-ounce version of Sandworm Slayer, you can also get a vibrant drink in a plastic cup filled with ice for a total cost of about $31. (Given that these drinks are sold at AMC’s MacGuffins bar, we wonder if you can also throw in a generous tip—come on, let’s bump that blue juice up to $40!)

Still, the resulting drink looks a little less exciting than the promotional photo of the drink, but that can be said about anything:

AMC adds that the drink, “like many of our movie-related beverages, is extremely popular on the AMC circuit and sold very well over the weekend.” In fact, if you drink a few of these, you’ll forget how many times you’ve said “Beetlejuice.”
