CB Robert Morris makes one-handed interception to become Interception of the Year candidate

A Robert Morris cornerback made what could easily be considered the best interception of the season on Saturday night.

Just before halftime of the Colonials’ game against Utah State at Maverik Stadium in Logan, Utah, Robert Morris’ Rob Carter completely stopped the Aggies’ final attack to preserve their halftime lead. Carter leapt in front of the Aggies’ receiver deep down the field and scooped up the ball with only his right hand while doing a full barrel roll. Watch it:

Carter was called for unsportsmanlike conduct after making the interception because he hit the ball and immediately started celebrating, but it didn’t make a difference. They still went into the locker room with the lead and Carter should win the award for best play of the day in college football.

Carter is in his second season with the Colonials this fall. He had 22 tackles in 10 games last season after two years at UVA Wise.

Utah State took the lead Saturday night after former Iowa quarterback Spencer Petras hit Kyrese White for a 57-yard touchdown in the first quarter. The Colonials responded with two touchdowns — first a 40-yard catch by Cole Mitchell and then a 31-yard run by Delvecchio Powell — in the second quarter to take the lead into the locker room. Utah State, however, rallied in the third quarter with another 53-yard touchdown catch by White and then followed that up with a 63-yard run by backup quarterback Bryson Barnes. That suddenly made it 26-14.

While there’s still plenty of football to be played and there will certainly be other interceptions that rival him in the months to come, Carter’s pick will undoubtedly be among the best of them in 2024.
