Evan Rachel Wood actually tripped during the “Across the Universe” scene

According to Evan Rachel Wood, one of the scenes from the 2007 Beatles-themed musical Through the universe is more grounded in reality than one might think. While hosting a special Cinespia screening of the film at Hollywood Forever Cemetery, Wood shared a behind-the-scenes story from the filming.

Notably, Wood did not present the film in person but instead recorded a video because she is “recovering from a knee injury and not going anywhere.”

“They told me to share a story or a funny moment that happened when we were on set,” Wood said. “Well, I’ll just say this…during the ‘I am the Walrus’ scene, every moment you see myself and Jim Sturgess, we’re tripping.”

Wood went on to note that the stars took real drugs while filming parts of the hallucinogenic sequence.

The scene in question is one of the most psychedelic moments in the film. During the sequence, Wood’s character, Lucy, and Sturgess’s Jude attend a nightclub performance where Bono, performing as “Dr. Robert”, sings the Beatles song “I Am the Walrus”. A montage of swirling colors and lights ensues as we are led to believe that the main characters are on a drug trip.

Wood said director Julie Taymor did not initially know that she and Sturgess were doing drugs for the scene. “When I told her that later, she said, ‘Oh. That makes sense!'” Wood said.

During the message, Wood also explained that Through the universe “It almost didn’t happen. »

“The studio executives wanted a lot of change. They wanted to remove everything political, queer and psychedelic. So almost every interesting part of this movie would have ended up in the editing room if not for our incredible director Julie Taymor. She stood her ground and asked the entire cast to support her and say we would remove our names from this movie if they dumped it like that.
