Origin story of Joseph Stalin Directed by Kornel Mundruczo

Hungarian filmmaker Kornél Mundruczó (Pieces of a Woman, white god) signed on to direct The revolution according to Kamoan ambitious biopic about the early life of Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin.

The functionality is based on a script of Cold War director Pawel Pawlikowski and Ben Hopkins, co-writer of the film by Kirill Serebrennikov in competition at Cannes Limonov: The Ballad of Eddie. The revolution according to Kamo spans 30 years, from 1891 to 1922, chronicling the birth of one of history’s deadliest dictators, as seen through the eyes of his devoted friend, ally and sidekick Kamo. The Georgian-language feature film is being prepared for filming in Georgia in 2025.

“It’s not so much about a man being born bad, but rather about the mechanics of power and how a man rises to the top,” Mundruczó said. “But it is also a passionate friendship between these two men who have known each other since they were children.”

“I was drawn to the storyline because we see one of the most brutal periods in history from the perspective of a true friend and comrade,” added Weber. “Rather than a biopic, the story presents a unique perspective in which we can see how power structures can corrupt even the purest emotions.”

Executive producers are Mike Goodridge of Good Chaos, Ilya Stewart of Hype Studios, MK Productions, Komplizen Film, Madants, Proton Cinema and Takes Film. Pawlikowski and Tanya Seghatchian will also produce for their Apocalypso Pictures banner.

Good Chaos’ Mike Goodridge is producing alongside France’s MK Productions, Germany’s Komplizen Film, Poland’s Madants, Hungary’s Proton Cinema and Tibilisi-based Takes Film. Pawlikowski and Tanya Seghatchian will also serve as producers for Apocalypso Pictures. The screenplay was initially developed with Film4.
