Patrick Mahomes’ Last Move With the Chiefs? A Pass Behind Travis Kelce’s Back

The Kansas City Chiefs quarterback has shown us many different throws during his NFL career, such as the no-look pass, jump passes and even throw left-handed.

On Saturday, during the Chiefs’ preseason game against the Detroit Lions, Mahomes tried a new technique: a behind-the-back pass.

After rolling to his right, Mahomes was pressured by Lions defender Josh Paschal when he attempted a trick pass to Travis Kelce, who gained eight yards and a first down on the play. The Chiefs’ drive would result in a field goal.

Saturday wasn’t Mahomes’ first behind-the-back pass. He’s been working on it for several weeks practicalcompleting passes to Isiah Pacheco and Carson Steele.

The three-time Super Bowl champion and two-time NFL MVP’s latest magic trick also drew reactions from some notable viewers of Saturday afternoon’s game.

Travis Kelce’s brother, former NFL center Jason Kelce, was watching and posted on X“That motherfucker really did it!! Magic Mahomes… Now that it’s done in preseason I got a fever and I need more bells.”

Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas was in attendance at GEHA Field and summarizes Mahomes’ decision perfectly: “It was useless, but beautiful!!!”

Mahomes said this week he had itching to attempt the pass in a game and that Chiefs head coach Andy Reid pushed him to do so.

“I’m telling you, he’s all for it,” Mahomes said. “I’m the one who’s hesitant to do it in the game.”

But, Mahomes said, the key to working with this new type of pass is: “If you’re going to do it, you’ve got to make it work.”

It worked on Saturday and don’t be surprised if we see it again at some point during the regular season.
