In a recent conversation with Sofa for mom Writer-director Niclas Larsson for Interview reviewTHE Triangle of sadness The director was asked if “awards create self-confidence or make you more uncertain?”

“I would say it makes you more insecure,” Östlund replied. “For me, it was exactly like that. Winning a Palme d’Or put more pressure on me, but winning two Palmes d’Or took a lot of pressure off me because it meant I wasn’t a one-hit wonder. But I also need pressure to perform.”

He added: “That’s why the goal of the next film is to win another Palme d’Or. It will be the first time in the history of cinema that a director will win three Palmes d’Or in a row.”

The Oscar-nominated director added earlier in the conversation: “I think true creative confidence, being successful at something, working on feature films, traveling the world and meeting people has also built my confidence. So it’s about gaining confidence in a profession and, through that, experiencing the world and being exposed to different social situations makes you even more confident.”

Östlund also earned two Oscar nominations for Triangle of sadnessincluding Best Director and Best Original Screenplay. The film was also nominated for Best Picture, while The place received a nomination for Best Foreign Language Film.
