Ryder Cup captain Keegan Bradley and Max Homa among Americans selected to join U.S. Presidents Cup team

The Presidents Cup teams are officially formed.

U.S. captain Jim Furyk and international captain Mike Weir both made their captaincy selections Tuesday afternoon to complete their squads for the Presidents Cup later this month.

The automatic qualifying period for the biennial event ended after the BMW Championship for both Team USA and the non-European international team. Scottie Scheffler, who earned his seventh win of the season and the FedEx Cup at the Tour Championship on Sunday, led the way for the United States. Xander Schauffele, Collin Morikawa, Wyndham Clark, Patrick Cantlay and Sahith Theegala also earned automatic qualifiers. Theegala finished third at the Tour Championship despite a self-inflicted penalty in the third round that cost him $2.5 million.

Hideki Matsuyama led the way for the international team. Tom Kim, Sungjae Im, Jason Day, Adam Scott and Ben An rounded out the first team.

The Presidents Cup will begin on September 26 at the Royal Montreal Golf Club in Quebec, Canada. The United States has won the last nine tournaments and holds an all-time record of 12 wins and 1 loss.

Perhaps Jim Furyk’s most notable pick is Keegan Bradley, who just won the BMW Championship despite being ranked last in the FedEx Cup standings. Bradley had previously been named assistant captain for the Presidents Cup, but he managed to break through after reaching the Tour Championship.

Bradley is also the captain of the U.S. Ryder Cup team for next year, which puts him in a unique position. He will be the youngest U.S. captain in decades, and he is still in the prime of his career.

“I would love to be a team captain (at the Ryder Cup),” Bradley said last month. “Nobody has really had the opportunity I’ve had. … It’s going to be very difficult for me to make the team, but if I do, I’ll play.”

Burns played for the United States in 2022, though he went 0-3-2 at Quail Hollow. Tony Finau will make his third appearance at the Presidents Cup, and 2023 British Open champion Brian Harman will make his debut. Harman has three top-10 finishes this season on the PGA Tour, including a runner-up finish at The Players Championship. Henley finished fourth at the Tour Championship last week, and Homa went a perfect 4-0 at the Presidents Cup in 2022.

With no Canadians automatically qualifying for the team, Weir chose to select three of them for the game in Quebec. Conners finished in the top 10 three times…
