Sigourney Weaver to receive Venice Golden Lion

Cinema icon Sigourney Weaver will be honored with the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at the 81st Venice International Film Festival.

Arguably one of the most acclaimed and versatile actresses of her generation, three-time Oscar nominee Weaver has moved easily across budgets and genres, from big-budget action franchises (Extraterrestrials, Avatar), comedy (ghost hunters, Galaxy Quest), biopics (Gorillas in the mist) and the art-house drama (Rampart, Master Gardner).

“An actress of Sigourney Weaver’s caliber has few rivals,” said Venice artistic director Alberto Barbera, who credited her with “paving the way for powerful actresses” with action films from the 1980s like Extraterrestrials While “successfully circumventing the labels that sought to restrict her,” he said the lifetime achievement honor was “a fitting recognition for a star who has built bridges between the most sophisticated art-house cinema and films that engage audiences in a frank and original way, while remaining true to herself.”

“I am truly honored to receive the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement from the Venice Biennale,” Weaver said in a statement. “Receiving this award is a privilege I share with all the filmmakers and collaborators I have worked with over the years.”

Weaver will next be seen in Bryan Fuller’s horror comedy Dust Bunny and Scott Derrickson’s sci-fi action film The throats as well as that of James Cameron Avatar suites.

Venice will announce the full lineup for the 2024 festival on July 23.
