“Street Fighter” Movie Loses “Talk to Me” Filmmakers

The streets are empty for Danny and Michael Philippou.

The twin Australian filmmaker duo behind last year’s surprise horror hit Talk to me no longer work on street fighterLegendary’s adaptation of Capcom’s classic video game.

Planning is partly to blame, sources say. Legendary and Capcom hoped to start as soon as possible. The Filipinos, however, focused on Bring her backwho leaves with their Talk to me workshop A24. That project, which will star Sally Hawkins and Billy Barratt, begins filming later this month in Australia.

Street Fighter is one of the most enduring fighting video game franchises of all time. It all started with the 1987 arcade game street fighterand set a high bar for arcade fighting games with Street Fighter II. The game, released in 1991, was the first to offer a choice of characters and combat techniques, revolutionizing head-to-head gaming.

Street Fighter II has become a phenomenon, with Capcom releasing countless special editions and remakes. In total, the franchise has sold 49 million units worldwide, with a new opus, Street Fighter 6, was released last year. The franchise was adapted into a 1994 film starring Jean-Claude Van Damme, while a 2009 feature film Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li starred Kristin Kreuk.
