Drama series
You couldn’t pay me to watch The Golden Age. I watched the first two episodes of To fall and I had no idea what was going on, so I gave up. I’m not a fan of The Morning Show — I was honestly shocked that he was nominated. The Crown was well done, and Elizabeth Debicki was amazing, but it’s just not my thing. I really liked it 3-body problem — you can see it’s from the same guys who made it Game of Thronesand there’s even a “Red Wedding” type moment that’s absolutely breathtaking. I didn’t think I was going to like it Mr. and Mrs. Smith — I didn’t know why you were doing something so recent again — but I loved it; both stars [Donald Glover and Maya Erskine] They were amazing and the dialogue was crackling. Slow horses It’s one of my favorite things on television — you can practically smell Gary Oldman through the TV — and I’m so happy that it’s finally being recognized. But I was just fascinated by Shogun. I didn’t expect to be drawn to this movie, but it was truly amazing. Not only was it captivating, but as a producer/director I was like, “They shot this in Vancouver?!” I really admire [FX chief John] Landgraf. He zigzags when others zigzag, which is incredibly rare in our business today. No one was rushing to make a limited series based on big books that don’t have recurring characters, and besides, it’s almost all in Japanese. There are so many things that made this movie a masterstroke that could have easily gone up in smoke. There aren’t many things on television where I think, “I don’t even know how they did that,” but there were a lot of them with this one. That earthquake sequence? I’d have to go back frame by frame to figure out how they did that.
My vote Shogun (FX)
Comedy series
I don’t think the concept of Tips Or There are only murders in the building holds up — how many times can you separate the characters and then reunite them? Royal palm was Triple-A [minor leagues of baseball] version of The White Lotus. I like Sidewalk Your enthusiasm, Dog reservation And What we do in the shadowsbut their nomination is sufficient. I almost voted for Abbott Elementary School because it’s still funny, and I want to applaud the fact that it’s on an old-school channel. But you can’t not vote for it The bear. I thought, “Well, they’re never going to live up to the first season; they’re going to have the same sophomore blues that most shows have.” But the second season was better than the first! This guy, Christopher Storer, is—and I don’t use this term lightly—a genius. That Christmas dinner episode is one of the top five episodes in the history of television.
My vote The bear (FX)
Limited or anthology series
Chemistry course It was a great book but a huge disappointment as a TV series — Brie Larson’s character never changes. Baby reindeer It takes a while to get going, but when it turns left, it’s the most brutally uncomfortable scenario…
