The film, based on real events from the 16th century, follows Parr’s quest to survive in her marriage to the king, after the first five of his wives met an untimely end – divorced, beheaded, died, divorced and beheaded at new.
“Katherine’s destiny was to change the kingdom forever,” the trailer’s narrator muses.
“When Henry names [Katherine] as regent, leader of the nation during his absence when he goes to fight overseas, he charts a dangerous path for him,” said the Brandon the synopsis reads. “Henry’s courtiers, suspecting her of sympathizing with the radical Protestant beliefs that have taken root in the kingdom and pose a threat to their power, plot against her and question her loyalty to the increasingly ill and paranoid king. ”
When the king returns, his courtiers convince him to “turn his fury” on his wife’s childhood friend, Anne Askew, who became one of Henry’s many court convicted of treason and burned at the stake.
“Horrified and privately grieving, Katherine finds herself under ever-increasing surveillance and suspicion,” the description continues. “Knowing that even a whisper of scandal could lead to her downfall, Katherine must enact her own plan to fight for survival. »
Katherine and Henry remained married from 1543 until the king’s death in 1547. Married twice before her union with the king, she then married a fourth and final time after his death, sadly dying in childbirth at age 36 in 1548.
