At the Met Gala on Monday night, Baz Luhrmann said he might not be quite done with Elvis Presley, after his 2022 film with Austin Butler.
The director said The Hollywood Reporter“Fans really want to know if all this footage we found in the vaults is going to become a concert film and I’m here to say I think it’s going to happen.” In October, Luhrmann had posted on Instagram that “we found reels and reels of previously unseen footage of Elvis on tour And It’s like that“, telling fans to “stay tuned. An accompanying video showed a cardboard box with a Warner Bros. label. and “Elvis outtakes box” written on the side.
It’s like that was a documentary following Elvis Presley’s Las Vegas Summer Festival in August 1970 (released with his 12th album of the same name) and Elvis on tour was a 1972 documentary that followed the star on a 15-city tour.
The director had also previously announced that he would release a long edit of Elvis with more performances from Butler, telling IndieWire at the film’s awards ceremony: “There’s a lot of material that totals four hours, but I’ve gone on record now saying it’s not today, not tomorrow, but at some point I will . [it]. Because Austin played his shows to the fullest. He did all the numbers. Austin just did it and it was an out-of-body experience watching him do these full shows, so one day I’ll put these full shows together.
There has been no update on this four-hour reduction since; Elvis was nominated for eight Academy Awards at the 2023 ceremony, including Best Picture and Best Actor for Butler.
