“Bookworm” by Elijah Wood will open the 2024 Fantasia festival

The 2024 Fantasia Film Festival will open with a world premiere for Bookwormstarring Elijah Wood and Nell Fisher from New Zealand filmmaker Ant Timpson.

The Independent reteams Wood with Come see daddy director Timpson and I saw the the Lord of the Rings The actor returns to New Zealand for the production. In BookwormFisher plays a 12-year-old girl whose life is turned upside down when her long-absent father, an American magician (Wood), comes to take care of her. Together, they embark on an ill-advised camping trip into the rugged New Zealand wilderness to track down a mythological beast that leads to increasingly absurd and treacherous adventures.

Other new titles added to the 28th edition of Fantasia lineup include World Bows for Alexander J. Farrel. The beast within, with Kit Harrington; Issac Ezban’s dystopian coming-of-age tale the little ones; and that of Vivieno Caldinelli Scared of shit, with Steven Ogg and Daniel Doheny.

There will also be international premieres for the Cannes title by Alexandre de La Patellière and Matthieu Delaporte the count of Monte Cristo; and that of Matthew Fifer Hazewith David Pittu and Brian J. Smith.

While the second wave of titles was announced Friday by the Montreal genre festival, Fantasia also announced an upcoming tribute to the career of Vincenzo Natali, the cube director. His other film credits include Spice up, the story of ghosts Haunter and Netflix In the tall grass.

Natali has also been busy directing episodic television shows, notably for NBC. HannibalFX StrainHBO Western worldat Starz American Gods and Netflix Lock and key And Cabinet of Curiosities by Guillermo Del Toro.

The Fantasia Film Festival, the full program of which will be revealed on July 3, will take place from July 18 to August 4.
