Ancient Marine Lee Stutts of Lake Norman defended himself Saturday against new federal charges against him related to the violence at the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021.
“I didn’t do what they say I did,” the 46-year-old Terrell resident told the Charlotte Observer, days after a federal grand jury in Washington, D.C., convicted him. charged with two other counts. “I didn’t hit any officers. I didn’t push any agent.
A superseding indictment filed Wednesday in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia adds two counts of assault and resisting or obstructing police officers using a dangerous weapon, for a total of 15 counts he charge against Stutts, according to an Observer review of court records.
A quashing the indictment typically adds charges to an initial indictment after investigators obtain additional information.
A federal grand jury initially indicted Stutts on Jan. 10, the Observer previously reported.
January 6, 2021, after a speech by the then president Donald Trump, Stutts joined several thousand people who marched on the Capitol building in Washington. There, a crowd broke through police barricades, entered the building and attempted to stop the joint session of Congress where electoral votes for the 2020 presidential election were being counted.
Members of Committee of the United States House of Representatives who investigated the Jan. 6 attack found that Trump provoked violence among his supporters through his false claims of election fraud.
Four people died at the Capitol on January 6, 2021, WTOP reported: a woman shot by a police officer, two men from natural causes, and a woman who died from an accidental amphetamine overdose. Stutts is accused of pushing and shoving officers with his hands, a barricade, a battering ram and a bicycle rack while he helped lead the breach of the Capitol, according to an arrest warrant affidavit.
In a January interview, Stutts told the Observer that he thought antifa would be at the Capitol, but instead he was met with walls of police armed with shields and batons.
He was referring to the far-left activists and anti-fascists who President Donald Trump blamed for protests against racial injustice across America in 2020.
“I went out there to support our country and kick some Antifa’s ass,” Stutts said in January. “We have to protect people.”
“I wore a helmet and I had fists,” he told the Observer in January. “I roughed it up a little bit, but I didn’t hit them, nothing like that.”
