Increase in waste rate at Alliance Municipal Council, study on algae

ALLIANCE ‒ City residents will pay more for garbage service starting in July.

The municipal council approved Monday evening a rate increase of between 4.6% and 5.2%, depending on the level of service, which will apply from July 1, 2024 to June 30, 2025.

The city’s contract with Kimble Recycling & Disposal Services will enter its final year with the new rate taking effect. The price increase is part of the deal.

The Alliance City Council meets every first and third Monday of the month in the Alliance Municipal Court Chambers, 470 E. Market St.

A few council members have expressed frustration with Kimble services in the past, but they couldn’t stop this increase.

Safety Services Director Mike Dreger said the city will seek additional bidders, including Kimble, for the next contract.

Here is how the rate increase is distributed:

  • Standard service will be $18.94 per month (83 cent increase)

  • Backdoor service will cost $31.46 ($1.45 increase)

  • Baggage service (seniors) will cost $8.99 with 57 cents per bag (44 cent increase)

There is no increase for residents needing an additional cart ($3), replacement cart ($99), and cart delivery ($15). Collection by mini-packers on private streets will also increase by $3.62 per month.

Dreger told council members the percentage increase was lower than in previous years because the amount of trash collected had decreased.

In other matters, the Municipal Council:

  • City officials have given permission to study the algae problem in Walborn and Deer Creek reservoirs for a possible solution. This problem has caused problems with the city’s raw water supply for more than 25 years, leading to higher treatment costs.

  • Received a $9,000 claim from a Webb Street resident, who said blockages in city-maintained sewer lines caused backups in her basement, causing $15,000 in damage, to twice in March. She asked municipal authorities to reimburse her for replacing household appliances and a furnace.

  • Heard Council’s safety and judicial committee will meet on May 15 to discuss possible changes to fireworks in the city.

  • I heard Mayor Andy Grove encourage residents to contact his office if they have concerns or suggestions on an issue. “Constructive criticism is not complaining, it’s making things better,” he said.
