Directors Jack O’Brien and George C. Wolfe will each receive a special 2024 Tony Award for their lifetime achievement in theater.
Wolfe is a five-time Tony Award-winning director, directing shows including Angels in America: Approaching the Millennium And Bring ‘da Noise, Bring ‘da Funk, and worked as a writer, producer and artistic director of the Public Theater from 1993 to 2005. O’Brien is a three-time Tony Award-winning director for Lacquer, Henry IV And The coast of utopiaamong many other Broadway credits, including last season Scaled, All my sons, Carrousel, The first page, The Full Montys, dirty rotten scoundrels And Porgy and Bess. He directed the Old Globe Theater in San Diego from 1981 to 2007 and has also directed projects in London and Off-Broadway.
In addition to his work in theater, which includes writing music and directing the musical Jelly’s Last Jam and direct the Tony Kushner film Caroline or changeWolfe directed and co-wrote the HBO film The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks and directed the Netflix adaptation of Ma Rainey’s black background and as well as Rustin.
