Jennifer Lopez Battles Simu Liu AI Villain

Jennifer Lopez confronts her distrust of technology to battle artificial intelligence villain Harlan, played by Simu Liu, in the latest trailer for Netflix’s upcoming sci-fi film Atlas.

In the first trailer for Atlas, Atlas Shepherd, a counterterrorism analyst based on Lopez’s data, for the first time showed his deep distrust of AI in disasters. But the new trailer introduces Liu as the AI character Harlan, who Atlas has been hunting for a long time and who almost ended humanity after being designed to advance it.

So, to save the future of humanity from AI, Atlas, in the latest trailer, learns to trust AI. As violent dystopian carnage dominates the trailer, Lopez jets off to a distant planet to capture a renegade robot and teams up with a computer program named Smith in what sometimes feels like a buddy comedy.

“I don’t need your help.” I don’t trust any AI,” Atlas says in exasperation at one point in the trailer. But soon, she calls for Smith’s help when her plans go completely awry. “Atlas, this won’t work if you don’t trust me,” says Smith, the AI program, as the technology guarantees his cooperation and the two join forces against Harlan.

Sterling K. Brown, Gregory James Cohan, Abraham Popoola, Lana Parrilla and Mark Strong also star in Brad Peyton’s sci-fi film which opens May 24.

Peyton (Carnage) directed Atlas based on a screenplay by Leo Sardarian and Aron Eli Coleite. Producers include Peyton, Lopez, Jeff Fierson, Joby Harold, Tory Tunnell, Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas, Benny Medina, Greg Berlanti and Sarah Schechter.
