Maddow Blog | RNC problems continue as party parts ways with its chief lawyer

Almost immediately after Donald TrumpThe hand-picked team took the reins At the Republican National Committee — a team that includes his daughter-in-law — the party’s new leaders got to work making significant personnel changes. Indeed, in mid-March, the RNC hired two new lawyers to oversee the party’s legal efforts during the election year.

Normally this wouldn’t be particularly noteworthy, but almost two months later it’s worth checking out the duo.

One of the lawyers hired by the RNC was Christina Bobb, who was chosen to serve as the party’s representative. senior advocate for election integrity. But it wasn’t long before an unfortunate problem arose: Bobb was recently indicted for alleged election-related crimes.

The other attorney was longtime Republican attorney Charlie Spies, who was hired to serve as an advisor to the RNC. chief lawyer. At least, that was the idea two months ago. NBC News reported during the weekend:

After the news became official, Trump took to his social media to celebrate the development. “Great news for the Republican Party. RINO Attorney Charlie Spies No Longer RNC Chief Counsel,” the former president wrotedenouncing the experienced Republican lawyer hired by his own RNC team.

At first glance, Spies seemed to bring an impressive partisan resume. The attorney has worked for a variety of prominent Republican officials and party entities, including Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, Jeb Bush’s super PAC and Mitt Romney’s 2008 presidential campaign.

But it’s not the kind of experience that Team Trump finds impressive. In fact, Spies’ recent history tied to the former president helps explain his brief tenure at the RNC.

NBC News report added, for example, that in 2021, Spies publicly contradicted false claims about voting machines changing votes. When asked on a Conservative Political Action Conference panel what to do if voting machines change votes, he opposed the idea. false conspiracy theory which was supported by Trump’s allies.

“I might get booed off stage for this, but I have to say that it’s just not true. There’s no evidence that it’s true,” Spies said at the time.

Indeed, a Washington Post report noted over the weekend that the lawyer’s career at the RNC was cut short, at least in part, because Trump “became angry at his critics of the former president’s false claims that the 2020 election had been stolen.”

When the former president recently spoke with Time magazine, he said he would have a hard time hiring anyone who would reject his ridiculous election lies. Obviously, this attitude extends to the RNC as well.

Everything wasn’t going well at the RNC before its new leadership team took over. Recent developments suggest that the party’s problems persist.
