Eventually, Mr. Miller is suspended from his job, loses his best friend, and his already strained relationship with his wife, Beatrice, collapses. Meanwhile, the film ends with Cairo smugly calling his teacher’s downfall “his greatest achievement yet.”
Suffice it to say, this storyline was deemed controversial by many, with Mr Miller arguably portrayed as a victim of his teenage student – with whom he shared a passionate kiss and fantasized about – while Cairo is vilified as the film’s complicit temptress.
Summarizing the speech, Screenrant pointed out that the plot reinforces “the harmful stereotype that teenage girls are largely responsible for inappropriate, power-balanced relationships.”
In addition to the disturbing storyline, viewers were uncomfortable with a fantasy scene that shows Cairo and Mr. Miller performing the graphic sex and foreplay depicted in Cairo’s erotic story.
Jenna was around 19 when the film was filmed and Martin was 50. Some considered this age gap inappropriate for a sex scene.
In February, Kristina Arjona, the intimacy coordinator who worked on Miller’s daughterdetailed how the scene in question was filmed and reassured fans that Jenna was protected throughout filming.
And now, in a new interview with The temperatureMartin defended the film, insisting it is “adult and nuanced,” adding: “It doesn’t say, ‘Isn’t this great?’ »
Martin’s comments received a mixed reaction from fans, with one person supporting him during a Reddit forum as they wrote: “I understand his point of view. Media education has disintegrated in recent years. There are many people who even think that things that are morally wrong, and even shown by the story to be false, should not be shown.
