Nominees for documentary, current affairs and public service

The Peabody Awards judges today announced the 41 nominees in the Documentary, News, Public Service and Radio/Podcast categories, selected to represent the most compelling and thought-provoking stories delivered across broadcast and streaming media in 2023 The nominees were chosen unanimously. of 32 jurors from more than 1,100 applications from television, podcasts/radio and the Web in the fields of entertainment, information, documentary, arts, children/youth, public service and multimedia programming.

Among the nominees for the documentary is the 2024 Oscar winner 20 days in Mariupol, which followed director Mstyslav Chernov as he led a team of AP journalists stuck in the Ukrainian city in 2022 after the Russian invasion. Five other Oscar-nominated documentaries also received Peabody nominations, including the 2023 nominees. Fox Story also received a nomination.

News and public service nominees cover topics such as life for women in America after the overturning of Roe v. Wade, the resurgence of the Taliban in Afghanistan, the Israel-Hamas conflict and the rise of Christian nationalism in the United States, while the radio/podcast nominees offer in-depth analysis of book banning, COVID tracking, prison reform and real crime.

“Whether speaking out against injustice or capturing the struggles and triumphs of inspiring figures around the world, these extraordinary nominees demonstrate the power and beauty of compelling storytelling,” said Jeffrey Jones, Director executive of Peabody, in a press release. “In an increasingly diverse and evolving media ecosystem, Peabody believes these nominees deserve special recognition for creating bold stories that continue to inspire us, but also challenge us to do better.”

The winners of the 84th Peabody Awards will be announced on May 9, then celebrated on Sunday, June 9, during a ceremony at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel in Los Angeles. This will be Peabody’s first in-person ceremony since 2019, as well as the first time the awards show will take place in Los Angeles.

Nominees for the remaining categories – including Arts, Children/Youth, Entertainment and Interactive & Immersive – will be announced on Thursday, April 25.
