Trump makes surprise last-minute endorsement for Sam Brown in Nevada Republican Senate primary

Former President Trump gave his last-minute endorsement in the Nevada Republican Senate primary to retired Capt. Sam Brown on Sunday night, ending speculation about whether he would support a candidate in the Republican primary. Tuesday between the Senate Republicans’ preferred candidate or a former ambassador who served in his administration.

In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump endorsed Brown over two other Republicans who have closely aligned themselves with the former president: former U.S. Ambassador to Iceland Jeff Gunter and former state Rep. Jim Marchant .

“Sam Brown is a FEARLESS AMERICAN PATRIOT, Purple Heart recipient, who has proven he has the ‘PURE GRIT’ and COURAGE necessary to confront our enemies, both foreign and domestic,” Trump said. wrote.

“I have gotten to know Sam and his beautiful wife, Amy, a First Lieutenant in the United States Army, and I know that in this next chapter of their life of service together, they will continue to make us all proud,” said he declared. wrote in a separate article. “Sam has already proven his love for our country, being horribly injured and making the comeback of his life. Sam Brown has my complete and utter approval – HE WILL NEVER LET YOU DOWN! »

The endorsement is especially noteworthy given that Gunter served as ambassador during the Trump administration and sought to prove he was more loyal to the former president than Brown, who initially distanced himself from Trump.

Meanwhile, the National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) rallied behind Brown throughout the primary.

Brown thanked Trump for his support, write on, “Thank you, President Trump, for your leadership. I am honored to have your approval. I look forward to working with you to deliver a better future for all Nevadans and Americans when we both win in November!!

Ahead of Trump’s rally Sunday in Las Vegas, speculation was swirling that the former president might make a last-minute pick in the race to unseat Sen. Jacky Rosen (D-Nevada) ahead of Tuesday’s primary. While the presumptive GOP presidential nominee has often supported contested GOP Senate primaries, he had notably refused to weigh in on the Silver State.

But at the rally Gunter and Brown attended, Trump called the retired army captain is a “good man,” while refraining from giving him an endorsement.

Trump’s support for Brown isn’t entirely shocking, given that many in the Republican Party, particularly Senate Republicans, have rallied around the retired Army officer. Brown was considered the favorite to win Tuesday, although the former president remained out of the race.

Still, Trump’s support comes very late in a primary in which many Nevadans have already voted early.

Nevada is one of a handful of states that will determine the race for the White House and which party controls the Senate in the fall. Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nev.) narrowly won re-election against Republican Adam Laxalt in 2022.
