Unemployment claims in Michigan increased last week

Initial claims for unemployment benefits in Michigan increased last week compared to the previous week, the US Department of Labor said Thursday.

New jobless claims, a proxy for layoffs, rose to 5,120 in the week ending April 27, from 4,824 the week before, the Labor Department said.

U.S. jobless claims remained the same, at 208,000 last week, on a seasonally adjusted basis.

New Hampshire saw the largest percentage increase in weekly claims, up 103.7%. Rhode Island, meanwhile, saw the largest percentage drop in new claims, with a 65.3% drop.
