The metaphorical bond between Trump and Pence was severed the day rioters stormed the U.S. Capitol to overturn the results of the 2020 election.
Investigations since the attack have revealed the former president’s plan to hand the election to him after his loss to President Joe Biden.
Pence’s refusal to overturn the election results allowed Trump to paint him as a traitor to his supporters in a series of posts on X, formerly Twitter, and even years later.
“Mike Pence did not have the courage to do what should have been done to protect our country and our Constitution, by giving states the opportunity to certify a corrected set of facts, not the fraudulent or inaccurate facts that we asked them to certify before,” Trump wrote in the message. “The United States demands the truth!” »
Rioters in the crowd chanted “Hang Mike Pence!” ” and broke into the Capitol as the former vice president and lawmakers were forced to escape during the attack. According to testimony, Trump was aware of the violence on the ground and did not call for it to stop.
“States want to fix their votes, which they now know were based on irregularities and fraud, and that the corrupt process never received legislative approval. All Mike Pence has to do is send them back to the United States, AND WE WIN. Do it, Mike, it’s time to show extreme courage! Trump wrote in another article on X.
Despite the threatened violence against him and the former president’s anger, Pence continued to defend his actions.
“Jan. 6 was a tragic day. I was there,” Pence told a group of voters in October. “I will always believe, by the grace of God, that I did my duty that day- there in supporting the Constitution of the United States.”
