SGovernor of South Dakota Kristi Noema republican and competitor reported for Donald Trump’s vice presidential pick in the 2024 election, was rebuffed after admitting to killing her dog in her new memoir.

After get a copy of No Turning Back: The Truth About What’s Wrong in Politics and How We Move America Forward before its publication next month, the Guardian reported that Noem wrote that she shot Cricket, a 14-month-old dog she intended to train to hunt pheasants, after the dog spoiled a hunt, killed another family’s chickens and decided to bite her.

Noem said Cricket had an “aggressive personality” and was “untrainable,” according to the GuardianThe report. Noem took Cricket pheasant hunting with some older dogs to try to teach the dog, but Cricket went “crazy with excitement, chasing all these birds and having the time of her life.”

She said she called Cricket, then used an e-collar to try to control the dog. On the way home, Cricket escaped from Noem’s truck and killed a local family’s chickens, which Noem compensated. The dog “then turned around to bite me,” the politician wrote.

After that, Noem said, “I realized I had to put her down.” She drove Cricket to a gravel pit and shot and killed the dog.

Noem also killed a goat that she said was “mean and nasty,” smelled “disgusting, musky, rancid” and “loved to chase” her children, knocking them over and ruining their clothes. She also killed the goat in the gravel pit, although she was allegedly shot twice.

Noem said she told Cricket’s story to show that in politics and in life, she was willing to do what was “difficult and complicated and ugly” if it was necessary.

The reaction from Democrats and conservatives was swift. Rick Wilson, co-founder of the anti-Trump PAC The Lincoln Project, criticized on X, formerly Twitter, that Noem “killed a puppy because she was lazy training bird dogs, not because it was a bad dog.” The Lincoln Project released an ad that said when tough times come with pets“shooting your dog in the face is not an option.”

Noem responded to the backlash Friday in an article on: “We love animals, but tough decisions like this happen all the time on a farm. Unfortunately, a few weeks ago we had to put down 3 horses that had been in our family for 25 years.
