A 15-year-old drowns at Shaver Lake. Friends tried to help teen, Fresno deputies say

A 15-year-old drowned in Shaver Lake Sunday afternoon, according to the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies responded to the lake at 12:30 a.m. after learning the teen had fallen from a pontoon boat at a popular recreation spot in the Sierra Nevada.

Lt. Joe Smith said the teen was on the boat with friends when he got out, then was separated from his personal flotation device before going underwater.

His friends tried to get him out of the water, but they couldn’t see through the water, Smith said.

Police were nearby on a boat and quickly arrived at the scene, but were unable to find the teen.

“The navigation officers were on scene long enough, they were able to spot the miner below the surface of the water, but he had already been underwater for almost an hour,” Smith said.

The Fresno County Sheriff’s Office dive team recovered the body, Smith said.
