The Cannes Film Festival has chosen its entire jury.
Oscar nominee Killers of the Flower Moon frontman Lily Gladstone, French stars Eva Green and Omar Sy and Italian actor Pierfrancisco Favino are among the stars who will join barbie Director Greta Gerwig, president of the jury at the 77th Cannes Film Festival this year, selected the winners, including the Palme d’Or for best film, from the lineup for the 2024 competition.
A trio of international directors nominated for Oscars: Lebanese filmmaker Nadine Labaki (Capernaum), the Spaniard Juan Antonio Bayona (Snow Society) and Japanese director Kore-eda Hirokazu (Shoplifters), as well as Turkish screenwriter and photographer Ebru Ceylan, co-writer of the 2014 Palme d’Or Winter sleep (with her husband Nuri Bilge Ceylan), complete the jury made up of five women and four men.
Among the films in the running for this year’s Palme d’Or are the highly anticipated Francis Ford Coppola film Megalopolis; Yorgos Lanthimos Poor things follow up Kinds of Kindness; Bird Scottish director Andrea Arnold; That of David Cronenberg The Shrouds; and Ali Abbasi’s Donald Trump drama The apprentice.
The 2024 Cannes Film Festival begins on May 14 with The second acta surreal comedy from French director Quentin Dupieux (Smoking causes coughing) with Léa Seydoux and Vincent Lindon. It will be premiered out of competition, just like that of George Miller. Furiosa: A Mad Max saga, the latest addition to the Australian apocalypse franchise, starring Anya Taylor-Joy; and Kevin Costner’s western epic Horizons: An American Saga – Chapter 1.
Cannes juries have a strong track record of selecting awards season contenders in small groups. Last year’s Palme, that of Justine Triet Anatomy of a fallwent from success on the Croisette to the Oscars, where the French film won the Oscar for best original screenplay and was nominated for best actress for star Sandra Hüller.
The 77th Cannes Film Festival takes place from May 14 to 25.
