LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Former Rep. Peter Meijer withdrew his name from the U.S. Senate race in Michigan on Friday, ending a long-running bid to become the Republican nominee and return to Congress after being ousted by voters for supporting an effort to impeach then-President Donald Trump.

Meijer met the April 23 deadline to submit petition signatures to have his name placed on the ballot for the August primary, but withdrew from the race Friday, a spokesperson confirmed. Meijer, a Grand Rapids native, is the heir to a Midwest grocery empire and a former U.S. Army reserve officer who served in Iraq. He was considered part of the next generation of Republican leaders when he was elected to the United States House of Representatives in 2020 at just 32 years old.
