Senate Advertising Surveillance, Hogan on the Border, Plus Big Support in CD-6

The two leading Democratic contenders for the open U.S. Senate seat, U.S. Rep. David Trone (D-6th) and Prince George’s County Executive. Angela Alsobrooks (D), have each started airing new television commercials in recent days.

Both ads, in their own way, seek to tout the electability of the candidates, along with the former governor. Larry Hogan (right) waiting in the wings for the bruising general election.

Alsobrooks’ announcement has two versions: one for the Baltimore media market And one for the Washington, DC market. But they each open with Gov. Wes Moore (D) and U.S. Sen. Chris Van Hollen (D) standing side by side. Moore speaks first.

“We know Maryland,” Moore says.

“And we know that Angela Alsobrooks is the right choice for the Senate,” adds Van Hollen.

Baltimore Advertising Next Shifts to Baltimore County Executive Johnny Olszewski Jr. (D), which says: “To invest in education.”

“To help keep our communities safe,” says the US representative. Kwesi Mfume (D-7th).

“To defend our democracy and the right to vote,” says the American representative. Jamie Raskin (D-8th).

“Defend women’s right to choose,” says State Comptroller Brooke Lierman (D).

The ad then features a voiceover from Moore, with photos of House Speaker Adrienne A. Jones (Baltimore County Democrat), U.S. Rep. John Sarbanes (D-3rd), and Lt. Governor Aruna Miller (Democrat).

“We all support Angela because we know her track record and we all believe in her vision.”

The ad then cuts to Alsobrooks, in a field, surrounded by a large number of recognizable elected officials and Democratic activists who supported her.

“We know Maryland,” Moore repeats.

“And we know that Angela is the Democrat who is going to win,” Van Hollen concludes.

Alsobrooks then steps forward and urges his supporters to “get to work.” They Applause.

The DC Media Market’s version of the ad replaces Olszewski and Mfume with testimony from U.S. Reps. Steny Hoyer (D-5th) and Glenn Ivey (D-4th), and Moore’s voiceover section replaces Jones’ image with Del . Jheanelle K. Wilkins (D-Montgomery).

Announcement of Trone primarily features the congressman speaking, although it is interspersed with photos of him on the campaign trail, average citizens, and a few notable elected officials who supported him. He also seeks to remind voters that Trone, who has spent more than $40 million of his own money on the campaign so far, has the money to compete with Hogan, who is unlikely to be well-funded in the election general.

“This is the margin between our Democratic Senate and a Republican Senate,” Trone says at the top of the ad, raising his index finger. “So if Larry Hogan wins, we will lose more than the majority. We are losing women’s right to choose. We could lose Social Security. And if Trump comes knocking, we could lose democracy itself.

“Polls say I’m the only candidate capable of beating Larry Hogan. So are Maryland officials, from Attorney General Brown to State Attorney Aisha Braveboy. And I intend to use every ounce of my energy and every…
