The Cannes Film Festival has revealed the inaugural lineup for its Immersive Competition section, the first-ever selection of augmented and virtual reality works to be screened at the austere French film festival.
The 8 competition titles and 6 out-of-competition screenings include works featuring talents such as Jessica Chastain, Colin Farrell, Millie Bobby Brown and Tahar Rahim. The programming highlights cutting-edge VR and AR techniques and includes location-based virtual reality, mixed reality experiences, projection mapping and holographic works.
In introducing the new immersive section, Cannes said it hopes to “highlight the next generation of international artists who are redefining storytelling and inventing new narrative experiences that go beyond the traditional two-dimensional cinema screen.” This section is organized with the support of the CNC. The immersive works will be presented in an exhibition space at the Cannes Cineum complex on the outskirts of the city and on the campus of the Georges Méliès Cannes film school.
The best immersive work will be rewarded during a ceremony on May 23.
The immersive sidebar will run from May 15-24, alongside the 2024 Cannes Film Festival (May 14-25).
