The Weirdest Met Gala Outfits Over the Years

Fashion’s biggest night is always unforgettable.

Celebrities take to the steps of the Met every first Monday in May to showcase their fashion A-game with a different theme each year. Sometimes, in an effort to be memorable, stars go above and beyond with their outfits, sometimes resulting in the most outrageous looks of the year.

This year’s Met Gala theme is The Sleeping Beauties: the awakening of fashion, with the “Garden of Time” dress code, leaving it up to the interpretation of the celebrities present – and their stylists. The title refers to some of the treasured garments in the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute collection, some of which are too fragile to hang upright lest they disintegrate. They will therefore rest in display cases, like Sleeping Beauty.

“When a costume enters the Met’s collection, it changes irrevocably,” said Costume Institute curator Michael Bolton. “It can’t be worn, obviously, you can’t see it moving, you can’t feel it, you can’t hear it, you can’t touch it.” He adds that the idea was to “awaken the sensory aspect” of the garment.

VogueAnna Wintour will host the event, alongside Zendaya, Jennifer Lopez, Bad Bunny and Chris Hemsworth, who will serve as her Met Gala co-chairs.

THE Sleeping beauties The exhibition opens May 10 at the Met and runs through September 2. Bolton explained that he was looking for a way to bring to life a collection of 33,000 pieces, many of which have not been seen. For this year’s exhibition, he chose around 250 creations, spanning four centuries. Its goal is to bring clothing to museum visitors via multiple senses beyond simple sight, including smell and hearing.

In honor of this year’s special evening, THR takes a look at some of the weirdest Met Gala outfits over the years — from Kim Kardashian’s head-to-toe black Balenciaga look to Jared Leto wearing it around his own head.
